Free Crochet Chart Reading Tutorial - Step-by-Step Photos and Charts. Part 1.

If I am to teach somebody how to crochet, I would start with a hook, yarn, "pencil" grip and a chart. Forget written instruction. Like learning a new language, you speak first, leave the grammar, it all will make much more sense later on.
I remember when I used a pattern with only written instruction for the first time in my life, how much frustration it brought. That was the last time too. Charts look exactly like what in your hands - your work.
I see more and more patterns with charts in American publications, the change I am very exited about. I include charts in all my patterns, alone with written instructions, so anyone can follow them.
If you still struggling with charts, this lesson is for you and I hope you will learn this skill in no time.
The tutorial will be divided in 2 parts due enormous amount of images. :)))

Stitch Key:

Understanding Crochet Charts for Rows.

Single Crochet Stitch Case:

Schematic.

Crochet hook 3 mm. Crochet thread size 10 (linen 3 ply thread) x 2 strands.

Foundation Row 1 starts from sign (1). Follow chart from (1) to the right. Crochet charts show rows from left to right (WS) and from right to left (RS). Normally there are no direction arrows in charts.
Start from the sign, showing row number in parentheses, follow chart to the end of the row. Next row will be shown in the opposite direction.
Green waves indicate that this chart does not show all the stitches. There is a repeated pattern within.
Row 1 (WS, foundation chain): leave 20'' (50 cm) end. Ch 17, turn.
Row 2 (RS): Starts from sign (2). Ch (turning chain), sc in 2nd ch from hook (do not count one on hook), 16 sc, turn. = 17 sc.
Odd rows 3-71 (WS): ch, 17 sc, turn.
Even rows 4-70 (RS): ch, 17 sc, turn.
After a few rows check the gauge. The case width should be 3 1/8'' (8 cm). Adjust number of stitches if needed by starting again.

Chart 1. Mirror case.

After 71 rows = 12 3/4'' (32.5 cm) fasten off, leaving 20'' (50 cm) end.
Block the case to given measurements with an iron using steam mode. Never press crochet garment, touch lightly.
Fold the case like a book cover, leaving 2 cm wide - one layer middle space.
Stitch shown sides together with overcast stitch using 20'' (50 cm) ends.

Put case aside.
