Free Pattern / Tutorial for Crochet Summer Tote Bag.

 Crochet Summer Tote Bag Pattern

Finished measurement:

Width 12'' (30 cm), height 14'' (35.5 cm).


Materials:

- 1 ball (about 400 yards) of mercerized  cotton crochet thread size 10 in ecru color (shown here: Aunt Lidia's classic 10),
- size 1.4 mm crochet hook,
- about 1 yard (90 cm) of matching quilted fabric,
- about 1 yard (90 cm) of matching lining fabric,
- 92'' (234 cm) of matching color home decor cord for handles,
- matching color thread,
- hand-sewing needle, sewing machine.



Gauge:

-1 motif = 2 5/8'' (7 cm) in diameter.
Take time to check gauge!


Notes:

- Make and connect all the motif before sewing bag, then check the size and adjust insert bag size accordingly.

Abbreviations:

beg - beginning
st - stitch
sp - space
yo - yarn over
prev - previous
rep - repeat
rnd - round
RS - right side
WS - wrong side

Crocheted outer bag:

Motifs: 
Loop 1:
Motif 1.1:
Rnd 1: ch 8, connect into a ring by sl st in 1st ch.
Rnd 2: ch, 16 sc in center of ring.
Rnd 3: ch, 2 sc in center of ring over 2nd rnd, ch-9 picot (p: ch 9, sl st in 1st ch), [4 sc in center of ring, ch-9 p] 5 times, 2 sc in center of ring, sl st in 1st sc.
Rnd 4: [in next xh-9 p: 2 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 3 tr, ch-3 p, 2 tr, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, skip 2 sc on Rnd 3, sl st in next sc] 6 times, make last sl st in 1st sc.

Motifs 1.2 - 1.9:
Rep instructions for 1.1, except for the last 2 petals. Instead of ch-3 p, at the top of 5th and 6th petals, make connecting (con) picots: ch, sc in adjacent p, ch, sl st in 1st ch.

Motif 1.10:
Rep instructions for 1.1, except make con p at the top of 2, 3, 5, 6 petals, connecting them to Motifs 1.1 and 1.9.

Loops 2-6:
Rep instructions, connect every motif as you go either in ch-3 p at the top of adjacent petal or in con sc if 2 petals are already connected.

Bottom:
Bottom includes 5 motifs.
Connect motif 7.1:
1st petal to 6.3, 2nd - to 6.2-6.3 con sc, 3rd - to 6.2, 4th - to 6.10, 5th - to 6.9-6.10 con sc, 6th - to 6.9.
Connect Motifs 7.2 and 7.3 to both sides of the bag the same way as 7.1.
Connect Motif 7.4:
1st petal - to 6.2-7.1 con sc, 2nd - to 6.1-6.2 con sc, 3rd - to the bottom petal of 6.1, 4th - to the prev connection of 6.1-3rd petal, 5th - to 6.1-6.10 con sc, 6th - to 6.10-7.1 con sc.
Connect Motif 7.5 the same way as 7.4, to finish another corner.

Finishing:

Hand-wash, dry flat on a thick towel, block work with an iron on steam mode.

Bag:

- Check the gauge. make adjustments to the size.
- Cut quilted fabric to 13'' (33 cm) (or width of your outer bag plus 1'' (3 cm) - this includes 1/2'' (1.5 cm) allowance for both sides) by 31.9'' (81 cm) (or height of your finished bag plus 4'' (10 cm) - this includes 2'' (5 cm) allowance for both top edges).
- Fold that piece in half RS inside and straight stitch sides with 1.5 cm seam allowance. Trim the seams. Press open with iron. Turn RS out.



- Cut lining fabric to 13'' (33 cm) (or width of your finished bag plus 1'' (3 cm) - this includes 1/2'' (1.5 cm) allowance for both sides)  by 30'' (76 cm) (or height of your finished bag plus 2'' (5 cm) - this includes 1'' (2.5 cm) seam allowance for both top edges).
- Fold that piece in half RS inside and straight stitch sides with 1.5 cm seam allowance. Trim the seams. Press seams to one side. Insert lining in the bag.




- Make cure crocheted piece edge is 2'' (5 cm) from the edge of quilted lining. Take crocheted outer piece off.
- Fold cord in half.
- Press 1'' (2. 5 cm) of quilted fabric down twice, tuck in lining and cord ends (2 ends between side seam and hem, folded end between another side and hem). Straight stitch in place, making short stitches and going back and forth a few times at the bag upper corners, where cord ends are attached.



- Pull the cord out and straight stitch again at the edge of the bag on both sides, securing cord to the bag, going back and forth a few times.



- Wear outer bag over inner bag,  hand stitch upper edge of the 1st loop to the lining with a back stitch, making small invisible stitches on the RS.
- Hand stitch bottom corners to the lining.

  10. I think the purse is beautiful and your pattern very clear and easy to follow. I really appreciate that you included detailed, step-by-step photos of the project. I also like that you included both written instructions and a charted diagram. I prefer to work from a chart, but many people prefer written instructions. By giving both, you are sure to reach more customers.

  12. Wow, I'm impressed ! I'm a visual person so I love that you added shematics and a chart, plus step-by-step pictures : when making something thought by someone else, I love to know where I'm going (so I always add tons of step by step pics in my patterns too).

  36. I absolutely love your blog and so very envious of the way you can look at something and be able to replicate it and in most cases make it even more beautiful. Thank you for all the shared information for all of us that do not have your gift. I too think crochet is extraordinarily beautiful as well as nature. I grew up on a large piece of land and from the beginning was drawn to the outdoors. When I could not be outdoors, I was rummaging about in the trucks in the attic filled with beautiful very old dresses filled with lace. I've been hooked ever since. Thank you so much once again for all the advice, patterns and explanations you give to us in each blog. You are so lucky to be so beautiful on the inside as well as on the outside.
